Ruth has always called herself a craftsperson first, and a jeweller second. We honour that stance in our production methods, championing the human and handmade process from start to finish, valuing the hands involved through our signature 'perfectly imperfect' aesthetic.

In a time when so much in our world is moving to digital and mechanical sources, it's more important than ever to highlight and nurture these age-old techniques.

When Ruth found out about a diamond cutter located near our Atelier in Hatton Garden, using traditional diamond cutting techniques and crafting the facets by hand, an idea sparked: an opportunity to further honour hand craft through a collaboration with another master craftsperson.

We have always favoured hand cut gemstones, opting for 'old cuts' over modern cuts wherever possible. Before Brexit, Ruth was able to work with a diamond cutter in Antwerp who produced unique creations for our designs. In Sri Lanka, she worked alongside local lapidarists for our 'Rahasa' collection. The discovery of Noor Diamonds close by has opened a new door of inspiration for our one-of-a-kind diamond pieces.

Creatively influenced by the natural crystal forms of the diamonds, and motivated to create as little waste as possible in the cutting process, Ruth ultimately let nature dictate the finished form of the stones in her newest 'London Cut' diamonds collection. She took inspiration from the simplicity of historical 'French cut', 'table cut' and 'rose cut diamonds' and worked with master diamond cutter, Hasim, from Noor Diamonds on translating the raw stones into faceted treasures. Given his skill, Hasim was able to consider the stones in a way that those who rely on modern diamond cutting machinery cannot. He could advise on what was possible, given the brief of minimal waste (i.e as little of the stone to be cut away as possible), whilst ensuring durability and avoiding revealing the diamonds natural inclusions on the surface facets.

A few months later, Ruth carefully considered her selection of freshly cut unconventional 'London Cut' diamonds, and designed and crafted a unique group of rings highlighting each of the stones. The result is a contemporary collection of jewels inspired by an incredible history and heritage of diamond cutting.

*In recognition of diamond cutting being classed as a "critically endangered" craft skill by the UK charity Heritage Crafts, Ruth Tomlinson has become a member of the charity to further support this and other crafts on the endangered list.
