As a brand that grew from a fundamental interest and passion for the natural world, we recognise our responsibility to manage our impact. We are inspired by those championing more ethical and environmentally conscious business practices and are taking steps to effectively play our part in this crucial global effort. We are continually educating ourselves to learn about different ways we can make improvements to our sustainability, from the way we create our jewels, to how we operate as a small business in the jewellery industry; our aim is to develop an ever more sustainable fine jewellery brand.
We believe how we create is just as important as what we create, and we are always open to ways in which we can improve our responsible approach to jewellery production. All of our jewels are handcrafted by our small team of skilled goldsmiths at our London Atelier. Alongside our in-house team, we work closely with a few local specialists, who are experts in particular parts of the making process, all based within walking distance of our Atelier. Our local production ensures we can actively oversee every step of the making process and quickly make improvements, while supporting fellow small businesses, and continuing to champion the traditional craft of jewellery-making in London’s historic jewellery district.
We carefully manage our stock levels to forecast demand and operate on a mostly ‘made to order’ basis, which means we only create exactly what is needed. We use non-toxic products in our workshop, this includes all jewellery cleaners used in both the manufacturing and finishing of the jewels. The lemel caught in our bench skins and swept up from our work surfaces and floors is all carefully collected for refining and recycling along with our scrap gold and gold dust. Our Atelier has been assessed for its energy efficiency and plastic and paper used in our office is recycled and reused wherever we can. We’re also proudly one of very few all-women teams based in Hatton Garden!
We acknowledge the many issues involved in sourcing the supply of materials to make truly ethical fine jewellery and are actively looking at improving transparency in this area.
Our jewellery is made in 100% recycled gold from our independent precious metal supplier. The majority of this gold is refined from post-consumer materials, such as jewellery, industrial-use metals, and electronics components. Recycling promotes a reduction of our planet’s resources’ extraction and decreases the global demand for newly mined gold - because precious metals can be recycled repeatedly without degradation in quality, they are a naturally renewable resource.
Every gemstone used in Ruth Tomlinson Jewellery has been responsibly sourced from our trusted partners, adhering to the Kimberley Process for our diamonds, and only sourcing our coloured gemstones from specific, traceable origins, avoiding conflict zones. We use antique (or ‘old cut’) diamonds wherever we can; not only because we love the history that these stones carry but because they are recycled, and they have zero environmental impact. Designed and made to last generations as timeless and enduring heirlooms, we avoid trends and believe in the notion of slow fashion, supporting independent brands and investing in pieces to last a lifetime. We celebrate an alternative to the traditional, producing jewellery that is beautifully designed, skilfully crafted, with a sense of enchantment and a touch of the unexpected. Each and every one of our handmade jewels is a unique creation, just like each of us, the individuals who wear and enjoy them.
We encourage our clients to transform their unworn heirloom jewels into one-of-a-kind, wearable treasures that better align with their personal style, while preserving the sentimental value of the original jewels. This unique and personal process brings us closer together and it’s a true privilege and an honour to be able to reimagine your treasured family heirlooms. Our repairs and reconditioning service also allows us to revive any well-loved R.T jewels, extending their lifespan for you and future generations.
